I'm writing this article for people who want to play DOOM for the first time, although I don't think there are many.
I tried to quote the DOOM wiki, but unfortunately the page was created by someone smarter than Spider Mastermind, so it was very difficult to read, so I decided to write it here myself.
(The method we will introduce here is how to play on a PC. Apparently there is a way to play with a smartphone, but I don't know about it and have no intention of doing so. If you want to know, ask young people, not old people like me.)
First, let's start by preparing DOOM.
Please don't make the mistake of buying DOOM (2016).
The official DOOM versions that can use the Call of DOOM MOD are listed below.
-DOOM (1993)
Store.steampowered.com
-DOOM II
Store.steampowered.com
(**Sales of the third game "Final DOOM" have ended. Why?)
I think you should buy both, but if you can only buy one, please buy "DOOM2".
One reason is that DOOM2 is more interesting, but the biggest reason I recommend it is because most custom map mods are currently designed to fit DOOM2.
There are very few custom map MODs that can be played using DOOM1, so if you want the most enjoyable experience possible, please use DOOM2.
I don't think it's appropriate, but if you're a user who wants to experience everything for free, try the completely free game "FREE DOOM."
FREE DOOM is a free game produced by a team unrelated to official DOOM, but it has the feature of being able to apply custom MODs for official DOOM. FREE DOOM1 and FREE DOOM2 have been released, fully compatible with the official DOOM1 and DOOM2.
"FREE DOOM."
Freedoom.github.io
To put it simply, by combining FREE DOOM2, your favorite custom map MOD, and this COD MOD (Brutal doom Ver), you will be able to play almost the same gameplay as DOOM2, except for some graphics.
Just to be clear, think of this like a free trial version of DOOM. If you like something about it, please be sure to purchase the retail version of DOOM. This game is full of dreams that are worth more than the price. (This is my personal opinion)
Anyway, now we have a DOOM game ready.
However, you cannot play DOOM using other MODs if you have just downloaded it.
The next thing to do is to install the engine to play the mod.
Please install the latest engine called "GZDOOM".
This is, in very simple terms, an engine that expands on the classic DOOM gameplay in a more modern way. By using this engine, you can handle most of the currently released MODs.
(A detailed technical explanation of GZDOOM and explanations about other engines will be omitted. Once you get used to working with DOOM, try searching for it yourself.)
When you install and start GZDOOM, the first thing you'll see is a cryptic message like "Please select IWAD."
"IWAD" refers to the official DOOM or FREE DOOM game data file I mentioned earlier.
There should be a file called "doom.wad" or "doom2.wad" in the location where you installed DOOM. Please load it into GZDOOM. (“freedoom1.wad” and “freedoom2.wad” for FREE DOOM)
Once the IWAD has finished loading, GZDOOM should ask you which IWAD to launch.
All you have to do is choose the DOOM you want to play, but if you want to launch a custom map mod, please launch it using "doom2 (or free doom2)" unless the author specifies otherwise.
Most custom map mods were created for Doom 2, and custom map mods for Doom 1 are now very rare.
I recommend starting DOOM without any mods to get a feel for the environment first. (DOOM without MODs is called "vanilla DOOM")
When starting the game for the first time, be sure to make various settings from the options menu in order to play the game comfortably. Screen settings and key settings are especially important.
By the way, GZDOOM allows a large number of settings, but I don't think it's necessary to completely understand them all. I myself don't have a perfect grasp. Just think intuitively and make only the necessary settings.
You are free to continue playing vanilla DOOM as is. I hope you enjoy it, but I think there are many players who find it lacking compared to the latest FPS games.
Next, let's start DOOM with the custom MOD applied.
There are more convenient and advanced methods, but the one I will introduce is the most primitive, "drag and drop". Grab the MOD file (.wad or .pk3) you want to use and drop it into GZDOOM.exe. This is all you need.
(While the main game file is called "IWAD", the file for MOD is called "PWAD". Remembering this term will help you understand the DOOM community's unique language a little better.)
It is possible to run multiple MODs from different authors at the same time, but please be careful as an error will occur if the systems conflict.
For example, if you try to combine two or more mods that significantly change a player's physical abilities at the same time, it is possible that a mutant will be created, but in most cases a system error will occur. It is unreasonable to run many complex mods at the same time unless the mod author explicitly states that it is okay to do so.
People reading this article should want to start "Call of DOOM: TARKOV", so here I will talk only about Call of DOOM: TARKOV.
Once you have finished downloading the mod, please memorize the steps carefully.
Call of DOOM: TARKOV must load three files, files A-B-C, into GZDOOM at the same time and in the correct order.
While holding down the Ctrl key, select the three files File A, File B, and File C, then "Grab File A" and drop it onto GZDOOM.exe. The game should then load properly in A-B-C order.
If you grab and drop file B, file C, and other custom MODs, they will be loaded in the order of B-A-C or C-A-B, causing an error. Also, please select only the file A that you want to start. Two files A cannot be started at the same time.
(It may seem like I'm writing too kindly and it's hard to understand, but if I don't write this carefully, there will always be users who load incorrectly and ask for help. For now, just get used to it. It's easier than making coffee.)
Assuming that you have successfully launched the DOOM game with the MOD applied, we will now explain the basic rules of the game DOOM.
I think it would probably be faster to look at the game's official manual, but I'll explain it briefly so you can understand the gist right away.
The player's goal in DOOM is to survive a battlefield destroyed by monsters from hell.
Since all your allies have died or turned into zombies, you are forced to fight alone. Basically, you won't have soldiers on your side coming to your rescue or going out to rescue your cute girlfriend.
What players should do in-game is as follows:
-Survive any crisis.
-Find a way out.
-Find a weapon to kill monsters.
-Find keys to open exits and armories.
-Find a kit to heal your injuries.
-Keep your armor in good condition.
-Find hidden armories and item caches.
(When I write it like this, doesn't it kind of resemble a $250 game?)
You don't have any allies, but you also don't have a boss imposing tedious tasks on you, so all tactics are up to you.
In addition to fighting, sometimes running away quietly is also a good strategy.
I'll give you some advice.
1.Find as many secret locations as possible.
Each map, whether official or custom, has many secret rooms.
By discovering as many secrets as possible, you'll discover powerful weapons left behind by dead soldiers and amazing treasures hidden by greedy monsters.
Especially in this COD MOD where you have to fight with many weapons, it is very important to explore secrets to increase the probability of obtaining good quality weapons and ammunition.
2.Never stand still on the battlefield.
This is not a metaphor.
In DOOM, you will encounter many monsters, and there will be many situations where you will have to run and avoid enemy attacks at close range. If you stop, you give the monster a chance to shoot you.
If you are spotted by an enemy, always move quickly to reduce the enemy's chances of targeting you.
3.Beware of traps.
Are important keys or weapons lying around in an empty room? It's almost always a brutal trap, unless the map creator is very kind.
The moment you grab the item, a hidden door will open and many monsters will come out. In worse cases, the ceiling will fall and crush you.
Observe the map and sight carefully. Do you have unnaturally colored walls or strange spaces?
Luckily, if you're a COD mod user, you probably have some great modern equipment like stun grenades, tear gas, claymores, and night vision goggle. Please use your favorite toy.
4.Watch the floor.
See the obviously poisonous colored swamps and the fiery lava? If you enter there, you will take damage and eventually die. If you want to cross such areas safely, get a white suit. You can nullify the damage floor for a certain period of time. However, it does not have the effect of protecting you from being bitten by monsters.
It is wise not to venture into such damage floors unless you are sure that there is a secret location beyond.
5.Take advantage of internal conflict.
The monsters share a mission to kill you, but they don't always get along.
When a monster is attacked by another monster, if the monster is of a different species, a killing spree will begin between them. Human-type enemies with guns are even stupider, and even if they're of the same species, they'll start fighting each other in crazy ways. If you make good use of this property, you may be able to save enough ammunition to defeat hordes, and you may be able to easily defeat powerful bosses.
This COD mod also allows you to use a silencer weapon to only shoot and anger a specific single monster standing in a group. Then, the monsters around them will misunderstand that their companion has gone insane and suddenly started rampaging, and will start fighting internally to suppress it. Just enjoy the rest.
6.Save your game frequently.
DOOM allows you to save and load at any time. The more you save, the more insurance you'll have in case of an emergency.
However, avoid saving when you are dying or falling into a lava pit that you cannot escape from.
7.If you are having trouble, please check the Wiki.
If you're really frustrated and can't figure out how to complete all Secret Places, check out the DOOM Wiki.
There, not only official DOOM maps, but also strategies for famous custom map mods are revealed.
After that, feel free to act as you like.
DOOM is truly endless play content.
If you're tired of taking things too seriously, you can mow the lawn, play the trumpet, play a racing game, or play golf inside DOOM.
For some reason, you can also access NSFW content using DOOM.
I'm not saying you should become a true DOOM believer like me, but I do think it would be good if more people became aware of the game DOOM and started playing it. (If you don't enjoy it, you can just leave quietly.)
I plan to introduce my recommended custom map MODs in another article.
