While very hit-or-miss, (some maps were either too difficult or cryptic, forcing me to cheat - others epic and fun) this is a highly influential retro HL1 mod containing some remarkable levels like Caged, Someplace Else, and Radix. If you dig retro HL1 mods, Project: Quantum Leap is a worth a playthrough. 7.5/10
Pretty cool mod, a bit too glitchy though.
Thoroughly stupid and thoroughly entertaining. This mod knows exactly what it is and has no qualms about it; I respect that! Belongs on the shelf next to House of Creep.
A fun but flawed little custom story.
Positives:
-Engaging interactivity of map design
-Motivates player to see what's next
Negatives:
-Samey-looking rooms makes exploration not particularly fun
-Lame, predictable story
-Frustrating puzzles. I had to look up a playthrough multiple times because the solutions were telegraphed in obscure ways or not at all.
Only recommended for Amnesia fanatics.
quite hard but i really enjoy stomping the nazis
I find the mod successful, but I have a hard time understanding the developers. For a long time they didn't release new versions of the mod here, then they started releasing them again, but at the same time they kept releasing them on their github page. They upload the full new versions here, but they still release new patches only on their github page. I don't understand why they choose to do it this way, but it only creates confusion for the community. Either keep releasing the mod only on Moddb or remove it from here. This mod is in a really big and annoying mess.
This mod is pretty short at only 30-40 minutes but sweet!
You take the role of a prisoner in some kind of combine prison (?) Now you have to escape it
You have 3 weapons in the game, the wrench, the pistol, and the shotgun, with limited ammo and supplies. You also only get a select number of health items so be careful, especially playing the higher difficulties
Overall, I'd say if you wanna waste some time and play another cool/short HL2 mod, go play this!
Also, shoutout to the mod team for fixing the issue I had with the vents!
While commendable (considering how broken the game is), it still has issues.
This custom story doesn't do anything wrong per se, but it is quite unremarkable in execution. I enjoyed the varied environments, though the maps were small and the mod short overall. The "story" might as well have been nonexistent, especially there being no notes to read in this mod and only keys to collect. Ultimately this was a fun little side quest in the world of Amnesia, but nothing more.
fascinating lil mod that has very nice looking maps at times.
suffers immensely from dubious level design at points though and im pretty certain 20% of the run-time is just cutscenes
yes, yes, I'm evaluating my own mod, but who cares?, I'll just say that the mod is naturally unfinished and so far that's all I can write
I had a great experience with the combat scenario. It strikes a good balance between platform jumping/action and shooting, which I found enjoyable.
However, I got a little disoriented in the middle of the level, especially when trying to open the portal (the one with a warehouse that fills with mines). It was easy to get lost, and I found it tiring to always have to backtrack.
I also encountered a bug related to steep ramps for certain objects, which caused me to get stuck, and I had to reload my save several times.
Despite these issues, it's a nice mod with pretty long gameplay! It took me 4 hours to beat it.
Great gameplay and custom assets, but lighting and brushwork can sometimes be a bit hit or miss, and there are a couple frame drops
One of the now forgotten classic HL mods but not without issues. A total conversion which we rarely see among good old mappacks. This isn't an action-packed experience, it tries to be realistic and cinematic. The setting is an office building, grounded in reality. No shooting down houndeyes and bullsquids this time around :)
The creator clearly wanted us to be a helpless office worker. You kill enemies with six axe hits, there is no crosshair and the flashlight is a separate item, which means you have to lower your weapon if you want to use it. This is all well and good, but you will get your hands on a weapon early on and the game will still turn into a regular run and gun regardless. You don't need to wait for the cops, just start cleaning the tower from the terrorists top to bottom with your gun, Die Hard style.
Like mentioned, the mod tries to be cinematic but this hampers the gameplay instead. Besides the aforementioned axe killing people with a whopping six hits, the player movement speed has also been slowed down, but it's not done well. You only move slow while moving forwards, you can still sprint sideways. There's also the breathing, running even for a little bit makes the character heave, it gets annoying fast.
It's not all doom and gloom of course. The mapping is good to average, some areas are nicely detailed while others aren't. Some of the ideas are interesting such as sneaking around enemies, the multiple endings, the flashlight mechanic etc.
While it has issues, Night at the Office is definitely a unique experience that's different from so many other HL mods. There's no reason not to try this classic.
This mod was just too short to fulfill its potential. The story had an interesting idea but not enough time to really flesh it out, and the puzzles were very rote. It wasn't badly made, just not very original and barebones.
Solid space adventure that actually feels like you're in a spaceship unlike some of the other mods with a similar premise. The level design is impressive, especially for 2003. The attention to detail in brushwork and the fact that little bits & pieces in geometry that weren't necessary but are included regardless is admirable. Without a doubt, the creator knew what he was doing.
While well designed, the levels tend to be a bit too dark in places, not a dealbreaker but still worth mentioning. There are some new content like sounds, textures, models, sprites and so on. The SMG is replaced with a futuristic weapon that's a joy to shoot. I also liked how good the combat feels thanks to the increased weapon damage and the new sounds. Hearing the Deus Ex pistol sounds still feels weird after all these years of playing though :)
Overall, this is a well made space adventure. I'm not a big fan of this setting in general, but I've still enjoyed it. I'm sure others will enjoy it even more.
Very good, but it's too short :(
Note: The title "Return to Brennenburg" is a misnomer. This is actually not tied to The Dark Descent.
Given the low expectations I had going in, I was pleasantly surprised by this mod.
Positives:
-Great overarching story! I was really compelled by the reason why Daniel was being tormented which was unraveled throughout playtime.
-Varied environments
-Some creativity in the puzzles
Negatives:
-Recycling of character and location names from The Dark Descent makes the story confusing at times
-Big empty rooms
-Glitchy textures
-Unused items
-Not all story elements came together
-Cheap jumpscares
-Unintuitive backtracking
I only recommend this custom story to hardcore Amnesia fanatics.
mixed feelings. you definitely did scare me a few times, and its a well made mod, so for that you get a good score. but i wasn't really "immersed". i don't know. pretty good.
I really enjoyed playing this mod. Unfortunally, i experienced a lot unstabilities through my gameplay, like just for the sole fact of passing by certain areas, the game crashes; even when i'm forced to pass through those areas, making the experience kind of frustrating. However, i did enjoy the mod
