Ashes is a Post-apocalypse themed total conversion for the GZDoom engine. It combines old school build style level design and Doom style action with a twist of Stalker and Fallout.

Post news Report RSS Ashes: Hard Reset Released

After too long, the latest chapter in the Ashes saga is now available.

Posted by on

Greetings scavs,

Bottom line up front: The time has finally come to bundle up Ashes: Hard Reset and send it out into the wasteland! We wont lie, development on this one has been chaotic with other team members drifting in and out, but Vostyok has put in yeoman's work to get this episode out.

As this is almost certainly what you came here for: HR should now or very shortly after be available as a raw pk3 or as part of the updated standalone package.

HR1

HR2

Screenshot 2024 06 08 165421

HR4

HR5

This is the initial release so expect rough corners and many bugs. Please report anything you find and watch out for wendigos.

Ashes: Now With a Manual!

Vostyok has spent some time throwing together a neat little instruction manual that delves into the world and mechanics of Ashes a bit more. It's in the stand alone package if you want to check it out.

Ashes Afterglow 1.15

After an embarrassingly long time Afterglow has been updated to 1.15. Both standalone and raw pk3 downloads have been updated, see those files for the changelog.

Voxel Pack

Some time ago friend of the project Memich released an add on that replaces most pickups in episode 1 & 2 with absolutely delicious voxel models. It's good stuff, so please check it out if that's your kind of thing.

Primeval Does it Again

John S. Weekley has once again returned as the mastermind behind the Ashes soundtrack. The latest tracks from Hard Reset are already available on youtube (as you can see), and if you feel like it and have some extra cash in your pocket you can grab it from his bandcamp.

Yes I'm going to shill the soundtrack in every post, cry about it.

Until next time scavs, keep your powder dry.

I played Ashes while having a bad breakup. This game was more than a distraction, it was a relief. Easily top 3 of all games I have ever encountered. Keep up the amazing work!

That music is really cool. I also want to say that if you put the Ashes series on Steam, I would happily pay twenty Euros or so for it, because you just don't get quality like this from the AAA content mills these days.

Doubt it would be possible to charge for the game. Copyrighted assets aside of the fact that its a endeavour by various modders. I mean they surely could release the game free on Steam but they would face legal issues if it would cost. But seeing as they havent released Ashes since 2018 on Steam I guess they have no plans to do so. You can donate to them if you want.

Sadly, standalone version doesn't work for me, although .pk3 runs fine. When I run .bat files, all I see is a black screen and then when I try clicking the mouse buttons, it hangs up with a message "GZDoom is not responding".

Incidentally, I had the same problem when I tried running Selaco with Vulkan renderer. All I saw was a black screen and then it hung up. OpenGL worked fine.

I have a Win11 laptop with AMD Ryzen 5 5600H and Radeon RX 5500M.

The stand alone is set up for Vulkan by default.
Delete the .ini file in the resources folder and restart.

Tried doing that. It just crashed with GZDoom Very Fatal Error.

UPD I updated the graphics card drivers and now everything works. I feel like a complete idiot. Sorry for bothering you and congratulations on Selaco release โ€” it is truly an outstanding game.

No problem, glad you were able to fix the issue. Believe me, technical issues are only easy if you already know the answer.

I just bought Hedon on Steam couple hours ago and that reminded me to check here for any news on Hard Reset! This timing sure makes me doubly happy with the purchase.

Oh how I envy you. I wish i could experience Hedon for the first time again.
On the other hand I wish i could buy Ashes on Steam to give these crazy talented people some compensation they definetely deserve.

Hedon was really boring and just a key hunt simulator. There are certainly many better boomer FPS games or Doom WADs.

For some reason my subtitles aren't working and I was wondering if there is a setting I have to check or if its a deeper bug. Thanks so much for the great work y'all did on Ashes and have a great day!

There seems to be a bug in Cordon with the conversation in the side-garage after helping the doc by locating Jacobs (er, "Jabobs" as the player calls him in this conversation). The doc opens the side path, I follow it, the bandit interrogates me and demands my gun (which I can't provide). Any offer to talk to the boss must be said twice, the lie option must be repeated twice, and name-dropping Jacobs to force a fight seems no different than any other option. I know there should be something else that happens here, because fumbling around with various choices caused three allied goons to appear on the other side of the fence on the right, but I can't seem to repeat that outcome no matter when I choose the Jacobs option. Regardless of the option picked, the outcome seems the same: I am surrounded and shot to ribbons, and the colonel is ticked off with my violence in the next level if I finish Cordon.

Yes, I did exactly the same and also can't avoid a fight. This feels like it's bugged, but I'm not 100% that it isn't intentional. I would appreciate if a dev could clarify what is actually going on with that section of the game.

yeah it's a bug, but I can't get it to replicate so might have to dig around and figure out what is happening

I'm playing through on the highest difficulty. Comments so far:

1. A lot of the enemies, such as the Wither and the Wendigo, are too tall to fit through many doorways. Is that intended? (It's very helpful for the high difficulty!)

2. In the (awesome!) game manual pdf, Apocalypse Difficulty claims you will get a lot of ammunition. However, At a few points, notably the ending of Night School and the fun house level, I was at absolutely zero for ammo and had to very carefully pick off enemies with the crowbar over a very long period of trial and error. A tactical challenge for sure, but not sure if intended.

3. I absolutely love this and all your games! Thank you for your work!

It doesn't matter that much but you'll be missing some minor context if you don't play Afterglow.

Thank you. My plan was to play Afterglow anyway, only when I'll have more time available, since I perceive it's a longer experience (I started playing it already when it came out but lost my save files, so I'll just have to start again). Wonderful experience by the way, and can't wait to dive in this world again.

Heya, congrats for the release! It's a perfect way to light up a monday, lol.

Really enjoying it, specially seeing how you guys are keeping the quality and production levels for this. I'm simply amazed.

This said, I found a potential soft lock (or maybe skill issue) in the, eh, farm? level, when you access the "basement", there's a room you can only access through the vents, but you can't leave afterwards:

Imgur.com
Imgur.com

I had to noclip out of there, so here's that.

Ah, this is nerd level, but I've seen a few references to late 90's pop culture (Judas Priest's Jugulator, Ghostface's mask). I guess this is in "who cares" territory, but if the war was in 1989-1992...

I visited that room but had no problem getting out by just standing on the chair.

FWIW, I'm using the latest GZDoom version, the PK3's from the Standalone (the HardReset and the Menu one), and the .ini also provided in the standalone as base for my config.

(I went back and no way: I need to crouch to get into the vent, but the chair is too low, I can't do Half-Life's "Jump+Crouch" and the ceiling is too low for me to jump "into" the vent. Going in an out from the other entry has no issues, though)

It could be a release synchronization issue. I am running the latest standalone.

I don't know. I'm running the 1.0 version of the pk3 and GZDoom 4.12.2, which are the same files than are in the "standalone" pack.

I have two more "mini mods", but these don't affect the movement in any way (Levelinfo and Gearbox)

Awesome, nice job regarding the release. Loved the previous Ashes mods, been waiting for a next episode :) Two things so far to report:

1. In junction II some of the generals voice lines do not play
2. In Outskirts, If you shoot the general, he reskins into a generic soldier

Awesome game! Really digging the level design and creepiness.

I've encountered some bugs with stims. They disappear from inventory, I'm not sure when. But I definitely bought purge stim (and spent 100 scrap) and it was not in the inventory during next level. Also I've found Regen stim and it also disappeared at some point (I didn't use any healing). I have a suspicion that they get lost at saving or loading.

Are there any cheats for getting scrap, so I can test it better and provide a more useful bug report?

hope there's some way of having the lightmode set to dark by default with mapinfo or something. GZ's update to the selection of sector lightmodes don't do the game's visuals and atmosphere justice!!1!

Just beat it and had a great time! Had a few snags, though.

1. Sometimes when talking to the general, the voice wouldn't play. I'm not sure if all of his lines just weren't recorded or if this is some sort of weird bug. It's only happened with the general, though. Everyone else is fine.

2. Maybe it's a skill issue on my part but Wendigos and those big mutant brutes are way too fast and jittery to reliably hit at range. I could buy that for the Wendigos but it made fighting the Gladiators a massive pain and ammo dump (playing on Apocalypse, for the record).

3. Again, maybe it's a skill issue on my part, but I feel like if you're going to add enemies that deal radiation damage, then maybe add a new pickup that helps to limit it. Something far weaker than the purge stim but strong enough to make a difference with those rad zombies; I found myself using a lot of pipe bombs, flamer fuel, and shotgun shells when trying to deal with them and most of my deaths were from them.

Aside from those, great job guys! This was a blast to play and I'm already contemplating a second play through. Fingers crossed for part 3!

Hello, I just finished playing the new Hard Reset episode. Overall, it was fantastic, but there were a couple of things that felt a bit jank and I would like to give my feedback:

I found myself stuck during the final level by the poker/casino area due to the soldiers cluttering and blocking the path forward when opening the door. I had to shoot one of them to push them out of the way and proceed to the door that the yellow keycard unlocked.

The new modular rifle's/LMG, despite being super awesome, has a rather janky reload animation compared to the other weapons and the laser sight module does not feel very useful.

The flashlight batteries are pretty scarce and do not last very long. This is not a very big issue, but I found myself in the dark a lot due to not being able to find any in some of the maps when I needed them. I also tried looking for a trader in the last hub to buy more, but could not find them.

On the topic of the last hub. Is there supposed to be a play? I paid the 10 dollars but nothing happened.
